Some of you may already know the reasons behind us raising money for Leukaemia Research, but for those of you who don't, I shall explain.....
In May 2007, my cousin Mel was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. She underwent several courses of intense chemotherapy, and radiotherapy which sadly had little effect on the horrible disease that was attacking her blood cells. She then underwent a stem cell transplant, followed by more chemo and radio therapy, and it was looking positive, the transplant seemed to have worked and follow up treatments were going ok. Sadly, just 8 months aftre the original diagnosis, Mel passed away after catching pneumonia and her body not having the strength to fight any more. She has left behind a husband and a 2 1/2 year old daughter and her whole family are grieving for the loss of a bright, caring, sensitive and funny 33 year old woman. But she left behind memories of a couragous lady, who refused to give up and was determined to fight for the life she had a right to, but that was taken from her.

Leukaemia Research is the only charity in the UK dedicated exclusively to researching blood cancers and disorders, including Leukaemia.
110,000 people - adults and children - are living with these cancers today. 24,500 people are newly diagnosed with a blood cancer every year, and around 7,000 of those are diagnosed with Leukaemia, which causes 4,300 deaths per year.
Leukaemia Research receive no Government grants, and they rely entirely on voluntary donations. Over £100 million needs to be raised over the next 5 years to sustain their investment into the research of blood disorders to improve treatments and find cures for blood cancers.
